Over the Spring break, my 4-year-old daughter brought home the class mascot, Tilly the Tiger, and was asked to keep a diary of their adventures. But when she saw her big brother writing a book as part of one of his projects, she said, “I want to make a book too!” So I supported with capturing all her imaginative moments with Tilly in the form of a story.
She proudly took her book to school and I thought she’d just show it to her teacher.
But when the teacher asked if she’d like to read it to the class she agreed and proudly sat in the teacher’s chair and read her story out loud to everyone. She loved telling me this!
That very same day, I was delivering a talk at work. I’d spoken to my children about it that morning, as they’re always curious about what I do.
And it made me pause. Had my daughter been inspired by our conversation? Did she feel brave because she saw me being brave too?
Our children, our teams, the people around us all model what they see. Confidence. Courage. Curiosity. It’s contagious.
So here’s to leading by example, even when we don’t realize how closely others are watching.
Who is watching you, and what are your behaviors showing them?
